Edgar came in with notes on Erlanger versus the New Sombrero Phosphate Company (1878) and other cases that might have some bearing on The Matlock and Ripley Textile Bank versus The Imperial Bauxite Trading Company. Skelton handed Alan’s letter to Edgar and pretended to look through the New Sombrero notes while he read it.

‘What does a police inspector earn, Edgar?’ Skelton asked when Edgar had finished.

‘A police inspector?’

‘£200 a year? £500?’

‘Sid Dutton, do you mean?’

‘Yes, what do you think he would have earned?’

‘I’ve really no idea.’

‘Enough so that his widow could afford to keep a sizeable house, a car and three servants? Enough to buy forty acres of land?’

‘I wouldn’t have thought so.’

‘Is forty acres a large garden or a small farm?’

‘We had a dispute over fifty acres a couple of years ago, if you remember. Gentleman by the name of Romney. He seemed to think fifty acres was a lot, so forty acres would be a lot minus twenty per cent.’

‘Quite a lot, then.’

‘Exactly.’

‘Would a police inspector earn enough money to buy quite a lot of land?’

‘As I say, I’ve no idea.’

‘Have we heard from Mr Critchlow?’

‘We had a letter from his daughter this morning.’

‘Rose.’

‘A pleasure to read; she really does have the most beautiful handwriting. She says her father’s gradually improving but still not quite tickety-boo.’

‘Let’s see what she can dig up about Sid Dutton’s forty.’
